3/15/2013: Shed Hunt

Posted March 17th, 2013 at 11:08 PM by Skewerer

I met up with "Snell" to do a little shed hunting last Friday after getting off work. The weather was beautiful, and we ended up finding a matching set off an 8-point. The antlers were laying about 5 ft. apart in some grass that is kept bushhogged throughout the late spring, summer, and early fall. During late winter, the deer like to hit the new growth in these areas as it slowly greens up. Snell spotted this pair, and I snapped a few pics ATL. We looked for a few hours, but we couldn't find any more bone. Still it was a good trip out.

That's just crazy how they drop simultaneously.

It's actually extremely rare from what I've read. In the March issue of D&DH, Charles Alsheimer, who raises, photographs, and studies a captive herd of whitetails wrote, "In more than 20 years of raising whitetails, I've only had three bucks cast both antlers at the same time, and none of the three ever did it again."

Oddly, this is the third set that I've seen together. Maybe its different for southern deer.
