10/9/2012: Bad Day Hunting > Good Day School

Posted October 16th, 2012 at 09:25 PM by Skewerer

Two nights per week I have classes for grad school, so hunting is off the agenda. On Tuesday, 10/9/12, I got word that class had been cancelled so I made quick plans for an impromptu hunt. All of my gear was at home so I cut out from work at 3:30pm, rushed home to grab my stuff, and then jetted out to the hunting camp.

Arriving around 4:15pm, I was met by my uncle who was already showered up, dressed in his camo, and about to head out for his hunt. We quickly discussed the plan for the evening hunt. He would sit a new lockon stand that is located on the extreme southern portion of the property while I'd venture to the northernmost portion where I'd hung my Lone Wolf a couple of days earlier. The wind was coming out of the east, and I thought that based on that direction I'd be downwind of approaching deer.

After bidding my uncle adieu, I got myself ready and hit the trail in the Bad Boy. The temperatures were warm, and I had worked up a lather by the time I made it to my spot. It was after 5pm before I was fully situated in my stand, and I cranked up my thermacell and awaited the action.

The afternoon was pleasant with a warm gentle breeze, and I caught myself wanting to doze off. The footfalls of a passing raccoon jolted me from the trance, and I came to full attention.

Meanwhile, I received a text from my uncle that he had numerous deer in front of him consisting of several does and fawns. He was horn hunting and elected to pass. I, on the other hand, had yet to see my first deer of the afternoon.

Shortly after 6pm that changed when I noticed a deer approaching from my downwind side. It was a doe, and she hung up about 75 yards away. The wind was completely wrong, and I watched helplessly as she reversed course and retreated back the way she came.

That doe was to be my only deer seen from the stand that afternoon, and I pulled my lockon on the way out. Despite the lackluster results, I was happy to have been sitting in my deer stand instead of a classroom. A bad day of hunting is better than a good day of school anytime!

(sorry for the poor pic, I didn't have many willing subjects on this hunt!)
