I try not to shoot through the bushes in the first place but the 35 Whelen is the best deer rifle that Iíve seen or used in the swamp . Mainly the accuracy but the no blood trailing or having to track is a real plus . If the only shots were through thick palmettos or brush Iíd probably go with 000 buck shot 12 ga. and hope for the best !

Well I got to really test out my "brush" gun this weekend. I had a 100 lb boar come through and rushed the shot. Pulled it and hit a tree. The hog ran off and I watched the tree that was in front of it slowly fall over. The hog ran by Qrole who was a couple hundred yards down. He was able to kill it fortunately because I had hit it in the snout after passing through the tree. My shot was about 80 yds. 35 Whelen, Barnes bullet.

This morning I shot a buck that weighed about 150-160 lbs. The bullet entered high on the point of the right shoulder and I found it under the hide on the left hindquarter. Fully intact. 35 Whelen Barnes bullet.

To me, a "woods" gun is a handy short gun chambered in a caliber large enough to reliably anchor the intended game quickly. It has nothing to do with the bullet blasting through sticks and brush on it's way to the target.

It anchored this sow in its tracks this morning. No trees harmed in the process.
