Default Fly Fishing

Been getting into fly fishing last few months...
Was wondering if anyone had suggestions on creeks to hit.
Looking like a trip to Kisatchie Bayou next weekend to try to target spots.. Not really sure on the best time to hit it, or where else we could head to wade and fly fish in LA.
Suggestions on areas, and flies would be appreciated!

Try the hwy 37 bridge in grangeville. There are sandbars and gravel to flyfish. I've caught bluegill and spotted bass using popping bugs with #10 hooks. The best colors were chartruese or white.

Went that weekend, each caught 50+ bream on Saturday.
Small top water poppers, foam spiders, hoppers.
Green seemed to do best, as they are eating the green grass hoppers.
Not much size but to catch them all day long on the fly, for someone new to fly fishing, it didn't matter.

Went back yesterday. Water much higher and stained, made it tougher. One spot subsurface on a stonefly nymph. Couple bream on same nymph with a hopper dropper rig in the deeper water, decent size on them. Couple on dry flies and small poppers, in high current shallow water just letting the fly float along, of course the fish were smaller in there but again still a blast.

It's addicting, I need to start tying cause buying flies is going to make me broke.

Tying is also addictive . Nothing like catching on flies you tie yourself . I tie perch poppers and bass poppers made out of football shaped voisies . Remove the rubber tube and glue in a piece of tooth pick . Glue the hook in the slot . Best bass topwaters I ever used and big perch will hit also . I paint with silver metal flake fingernail polish or chartrusse polish with a top coat of clear hardener .

Guys how hard was the casting to pick up fly fishing ? I am extremely comfortable with medium tackle open face reels. Have been fishing my entire life like many of you all. The reason I'm asking I've never casted a fly rod but we are taking Vacation to Belize in a few weeks and there is some world class fly fishing there. I don't want to pass up an opportunity to book a trip if its something That I could get the hang of in a few hours. Obviously it takes years to master, but I just need to be functional.

Ain't bad at all. Now there's a ton of different style for different scenarios and I still got plenty to learn. But to get good enough to catch fish wouldn't take you long. I'm sure the guide there will be used to teaching new folks.
Shoot me a PM if you want to meet up and try my rod out. Got a few little ponds around here I hit up after work sometimes!

Pack and Paddle in Lafayette also has a "low key" fly fish hang out coming up on the 15th.

Again I barely know what I'm doing but I do catch fish haha but you are more than welcome to try out my rod just to get a feel. Orvis puts out some great instructional videos on youtube also.

Yea man, If you get the time and you decide you want to check it out just give me a hollar.
Either way you'll have an amazing trip, don't let lack of experience hold you back from doing it, pretty much all fly guides are prepared to supply gear and lessons. Definitely share with us how it goes!
And get ready to start blowing $, it ain't as pricey as archery but not far off either haha.
