Default Sandhill Cranes

Been wanting to go on a Crane hunt for years. I looked around and found a hunt South of Houston. Was a awesome experience, these birds are very vocal and respond to calling and decoy allot like specs.

They are huge.

My son and I had a awesome hunt, will definitely do it again!!

That’s awesome. Steve Rinella of meat eater said they are steaks in the sky. Said they are delicious. What outfitter did you use and how much was everything?

Can you use lead shot on cranes? From the size in the pic it would take T size steel to fold a bird that size.

Yes, you can use lead but we used steel shot because there were allot of geese in the area and it would have been illegal to shoot at them with lead. We could have shot several specs. We shot them with 3" BB.

The shots were very close, as the guide had been scouting them feeding in the field we were hunting for 4 straight days and they worked in perfectly.

I saw that episode and he is right. I BBQ some yesterday just like you would cook a steak and we were shocked as it tastes like a good fillet cooked rare to medium rare. You would have no idea the meat came from a bird it you weren't told. Very good!

Where did y’all hunt. I grew up in bay city probably within 20-30 miles of where you hunted. We’ve been hunting them for years and my dad would absolutely shut down a duck hunt to go after cranes. Gotta watch that sharp beak on a wounded bird, they’ll take out a dogs eye.

We hunted about 10 miles from ElCampo.
