I don’t doubt that hogs contribute to the problem, but each geographical area has its specific problems. I agree hogs are a major fault.
I layed out what i know about Tangi, St Tamm, & some of Wash. parishes.
Now, Tensas, from 2000 to 06, i had a blast. Times hunting turkey i will always reminisce. Man i was on them big time. Then came the big messy select cuts, and the hogs. It has never recovered.
I've been hunting my lease in East Feliciana since 1984. We were infested with turkeys. No problem limiting out every year. Everything changed in 2010 when the woods were select cut. It got so thick you couldn't walk through, much less the turkeys. The hogs showed up that same year and the turkey population has gone down every year.
My first experience with Turkeys happened in East Feliciana parish while Deer hunting back in '85. I was quietly walking down a dirt road and when I came around a bend in the road, 2 monster size hens [?] took off flying 10 feet from me. I was not sure who was more surprised at this encounter?
I hunted lease's and 'publics land were had birds then here come's the
logging and cut trees destroyed the habitat. I am a NWTF member .
The NWTF does more of the turkey population than Louisiana than the
La. Wildlife & Fisheries. In some area of the state flooding and hogs is a major problem.
You would think the NWTF would take notice of so many sloppy select cutting practices effecting turkeys, and assert their influence to “ clean up” cut areas pristine, branches, etc, level ruts, etc
