We’re up at the camp still and the rut is usually going pretty good about now. I’ve been seeing does and small bucks but nothing I wanted to shoot. It had been warm but today there was heavy rain moving in around 11am and it looked like it would clear out by about 3pm. I figured that sounded like a perfect opportunity to catch a big buck up on his feet looking for does or freshening up scrapes. In the evenings this time of year I like to hunt downwind of food plots in the evenings. It seems like the bucks will travel the downwind side scent checking and/or sight checking for potential receptive does. I got in the stand about 1:45 while it was still raining heavy bc I wanted to be in the woods the minute the rain cleared up. About 3:45 the skies opened up and it was just beautiful. This was exactly what I was hoping for. About 4:15 I caught movement about 30 yards off of the greenfield. I instantly noticed it to be a good looking buck and knew I would shoot if I had a shot. He came cruising right through a couple openings and I put one right in him. He made it about 50 yards before falling into a creek where he took his last breaths. I was so excited because my plan worked to perfection and the buck did exactly what I thought he was going to do. It feels good when a plan comes together like that.
