Default 183" Avoyelles Parish MONSTER!!

While we were stopping around Grassy Lake, this was killed just up the road. Keep in mind that Scott is a 300 lb guy.

183” Avoyelles Parish Brute Down
By: Greg Hicks

Anyone who hunts for big whitetails in Louisiana knows that Avoyelles Parish holds some of the biggest deer in the state. Scott Roszell of Effie, La. knows first hand how big the deer can grow in the central Louisiana parish. Born and raised in Avoyelles, Scott has seen deer come out in this area all of his life that would score anywhere from 150”-180” and hoped that one day, he would be the proud owner of such a prized possession. 32 hunting years later, his dream was realized in the form of a deer that would score 183 7/8”.

January 22, 2010 found Scott hunting an area where he knew good deer were known to walk. Hunting close to the Lake Ophelia NWR, Scott hoped that one of the brutes he and his cousin have on their trail cameras would grace him with his precence that morning. The day did not start the way Scott had hoped it would. A heavy fog had rolled in, making visibility very limited but Roszell’s hopes stayed up and the hunter stayed on high alert. At 7:30 A.M., Scott saw to small bucks, but they were far from the 145” antler restriction that he and the other hunters in his area are limited to. After watching the small bucks pass, Scott noticed another buck with a doe farther out in the CRP and he knew immediately the buck was large enough to meet the area’s antler restrictions. After estimating the distance to be close to 450 yards and knowing his Remington 7mm Magnum could handle the yardage, he decided to take the shot. “I’ve hunted bean fields my whole life, so a shot of that distance didn’t bother me,” explained Roszell. After taking the first shot, the buck barely ran. Another shot was fired and again the deer barely moved. Another shot was fired and yet again, the deer didn’t bolt very far away. After the fourth shot, both the buck and doe began to become somewhat nervous and moved to a spot in the CRP that was a bit closer to Scott. With the fifth shot, he hit the deer but not fatally, and fired lucky number six which brought the Avoyelles Parish monster down. After hearing all of the shots, Scott’s cousin called him to see if he needed anymore bullets. “I told him that I didn’t need anymore because I had one bullet left and the buck was down!” laughed Roszell.

After taking the deer to the land owner for inspection, it started to become evident just how big the deer actually was. “We thought mid-160’s but when he finished taping it, he came up with 183”. I couldn’t believe it,” said Roszell. The deer had 15 scoreable points, a 20 ¼” inside spread, 6” bases, and weighed 220 lbs. The deer’s age was estimated to be close to 5 years old and is a testament to what quality deer management is capable of producing. After hunting for 32 years, Scott Roszell finally has his dream buck. Congratulations Scott, on a fine Avoyelles Parish monster buck!
