UPDATE: On Thursday, July 9, Governor Bobby Jindal signed into law Senate Bill 52, which establishes a tax exemption for outdoor purchases during the first weekend in September, thus naming it Second Amendment Weekend. Items will be exempt from Louisiana state sales tax during this weekend, including archery, off-road vehicles, and vessels such as ATVs, airboats, and pirogues, accessories, animal feed, apparel, shoes, bags, float tubes, binoculars, tools, firearm and archery cases, firearm and archery accessories, range finders, knives, decoys, treestands, blinds, chairs, optics, hearing protection and enhancements, holsters, belts, slings and miscellaneous gear. The maximum amount exempted from an individual purchase is $2,500. For 2009, Second Amendment weekend will occur this September 4-6.

5/26/2009: On Thursday, May 22, the Louisiana Senate advanced Senate Bill 52 by a vote of 34-0, which proposes deeming the first weekend of September “Second Amendment Weekend” throughout Louisiana. Although the process is not finished, the bill has completed another crucial step at becomming law due to the diligence of Louisiana’s outdoor and gun enthusiast communities.

The bill, authored by Senator Rob Marionneaux (D, Dist 17), proposes state and local sales tax exemptions for hunting and firearms related purchases, including archery supplies, ATVs, airboats & pirogues, accessories, animal feed, apparel, shoes, bags, float tubes, binoculars, tools, range finders, tree stands, blinds, chairs, and holsters.

A similar but less-thorough version of the bill, HB 128, is pending approval in the House. In all likelihood, a intermixed version of the two bills stands the greatest chance of universal passage in both chambers of the Legislature, but only with the public’s grassroots support. Citizens interested in facilitating SB 52′s passage should contact their local representatives and voice support for the bill, because it’s very likely receiving opposition from gun control advocates.
