This is a time that’s filled with sleepless nights spent waiting and wondering if this year will be the year that we finally kill that monster buck. Every season we hit the woods with high spirits and soaring enthusiasm, and we always feel this year we will hunt more, hunt harder, and hunt longer. Can you blame us for feeling this way? This is our passion—our dream; this is heart stopping, nerve-racking bowhunting we’re talking about here. There’s nothing like living the dream at full throttle. What else are you involved in that can take you from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in 2.5 seconds flat. If you bowhunt, you know this feeling I’m talking about all too well. Somewhere along the way you’ve felt it as it’s tugged at your soul. It’s that feeling that keeps us coming back time and time again to prove to ourselves that we can do it no matter how mentally and physically challenging it can be when things aren’t going our way. This is a time when we study aerial maps for hours on end meticulously plotting, planning, and hopefully scheming our way to success.
At this time of year, does the work and preparation ever really come to and end? Hell no. There’s way to much to do. Being the competitive alpha males we are, we take this stuff way too serious to not be ready. Get off your butt and take care of business before it sneaks up on you because we are in the final stages of the Countdown ‘Till Smackdown! Are you ready?

That pretty much sums it up!!!!!!! I sit here at work everyday waiting to get home and do something, whether it is shooting my bow with friends or scouting with friends, every day until Sept. 19 I will be doing something to try and subdue the itch. This site (bayoubucks) has made the itch worse than it has ever been in the last few years, so I must thank everyone here for that.
My wife gives me that look too!! This will be my first year hutning from a loc-on style stand and I have three ready at three different style stands….corn, acorns, and a main trail. Each time Fed-Ex drops off a box, she just glares at me!!! Plus, thanks to bayoubucks.com, I have gotten into the trailcam craze so that doesn’t help either.
Nice trailer set up widow
Great article. Like pouring gas on the fire. Every year at this time I wish I would have spent more time in the woods in March scouting when I could actually see.
We are definitely blood brothers my friend. Awoke last night to the sound of leaves russtling behind me only to giggle to myself and dream on.
Relentless Pursuit of the smackdown! Man I can’t even watch huntin’ shows this time of the year, makes me want to open the season early! So much to do and so little time to do it…and you’re right about that back pack…every year I clean it out to make it lighter and always end up with more than it had in it before!another good article Widow
I sit here in my living room and look around and there is my compound, my recurve, my targets, my new stand and sticks, my haul of stuff from Cabelas, and the new dozen arrows that came in the mail today, mailed Corey a check for another Swamp Ghost Cam today, making Jerky from last years kill, quit calling my girl friend, OMG this is the countdown to Smackdown and I am caught up with it. I should come to my senses sometime in February.
Countdown till Smackdown………I LIKE IT!!!!!!
I have learned one sure thing from this artical…….I got a BIG DAM BALD SPOT on the back of my head…..WOW!!!!
I work from Febraury 1st until September 30th to prepare for each season. No matter how much I get accomplished I always feel I could have done more. Then when the fall plots are planted the nervousness eases and anxiety begins. Great article Russell.
Yep, looking like an OLD MAN.
TICK TOCK,,,TIC TOCK,,,,TICK TOCK!!!!!!
It’s that time again…..Tick tock,tick tock!!!!
