As the New Year rang in, the big bucks kept coming and Tommy Deloach of Effie, LA was next on the list. Tommy, his son Eric, and grandson Logan had made their plans on where they would hunt the afternoon of January 1, 2010, when Logan told Tommy, “Paw-Paw, we gonna kill a world record buck this evenin’!” The words the young man spoke held some truth to them as Tommy took a great deer scoring 166″ gross and had a total of 13 points. Tommy was raised in the woods his lease is on in Avoyelles Parish and knew what size deer that area can produce year in and year out.
Not to be outdone that day, Jacques Dugas of Lafayette, LA had to flex his 15 year old muscles and show what a Matthews Swithback XT could bring down and again it was an Avoyelles Parish buck. Jacques had seen his dream buck three hunts in a row during the 2008-2009 season, but was unable to get a clear shot. The youngster patiently waited a year before even stepping foot in the same area, but when he finally did, he knew that he may get another chance at his monster. Sure enough, at 5:00 PM that evening from a Primos Double Bull ground blind, Jacques sent a Muzzy 3 blade broadhead through the vitals of the big buck at a mere 15 yards. The buck sported a rack complete with 12 points, a 22″ inside spread, bases nearly 6 inches in diameter, and a score of 175 7/8″.
Avoyelles Parish pumped out another heavy horned Louisiana buck just a few days later on January 3, 2010. Shelly Fontenot killed a whopper on her lease just outside of Mansura, LA that made jaws drop all over the state. Shelly decided to put her time in and sit from noon until dark that day. Right at last light a mainframe seven point with enough “kickers” to make it a ten point stepped out and Shelly laid the hammer down on the brute. The bucks rack was staggering: 20 ¼” inside spread, bases that stretched the tape out to 7 ½” around, and a main beam that ran out to 22 ½” long.
