When a youth gets into hunting, that’s a wonderful thing, but when a youth tries to help another youth get into hunting, well that’s just priceless. For the Coreil family of Zachary, La, hunting starts young. “I used have Cory and twin brother Ryan in the same stand as me when they were younger. I’d sit right between them so if they shot, I was right there for it all,” said Dad, Gordon Coreil. With his guidance, his kids have turned into fine and also good hunters, but lady luck was hunting with Cory on the day of November 26, 2010. Actually her name isn’t really lady luck, it’s Julia, but might as well be as the Coreil’s have found out.
The Coreil family set out hunting the day after Thanksgiving with high hopes. Gordon and Ryan went to one stand, while 17 year old Corey and 12 year old Julia went to another one. “It was raining, so we tried to time it to where we were in the stand when the rain stopped. We got there around 2:30 and after nearly an hour, the deer started moving good, but so did Julia. I was trying to keep her still when I see this buck come out in our food plot. I knew he was a decent buck, and that’s what I was hoping we’d see. I really wanted to get her a shot on a decent buck,” explained Cory. The plan was for brother to aim the rifle and sister was going to pull the trigger, but when Cory got a better look at the deer through his scope, they went to plan B. “I looked through the scope to aim and that’s when I saw all these points. Well, when I saw that I told Julia ‘sorry, but I’m shooting this one’,” laughed Cory. The Zachary High School Senior took careful aim with his .270 Mossberg and took the shot. “I was expecting Julia to watch the buck, but when I asked her what the deer did when I shot, she said she didn’t know because she was watching the gun,” Cory went on to say. The pair then got out of the stand and started to look for blood.
After looking where he thought the deer was standing when he shot, Cory couldn’t find any blood at all and disappointment started to set it. “I told Julia to walk back to the stand while I continued to look. I finally found a lot of blood and called my Dad to tell him that I had hit a big buck,” said Cory. Gordon finally got to the anxious pair of hunters and they started on the blood trail. “I let them take the lead and find the blood, but when I saw the deer lying there, I just stopped. I seriously had to take a minute and collect my thoughts. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was very hard to wrap my head around the fact that my son had just killed the biggest deer I’ve ever seen,” said the proud Dad. It took a few minutes to get the deer out of the woods and to the camp, but when they pulled up with the monster, a crowd soon started to form. “There were a lot of people taking pictures and talking about the deer. We determined later that nobody on the lease had a picture of the deer at all. We have no idea where he came from,” said Gordon.

This deer is proof that just because you don't have any trail camera pictures of big deer, that doesn'they aren't there.
The buck was impressive to say the least. He had a total of 22 points, weighed 175 pounds, and was scored at F S Willaims Country Store in Ethel, La at 178″.
While the Coreil family likes to hunt together, they also have a little lucky charm that has just started joining them. “You know, Julia has only ever been on two hunts in her life. She went with me last year and I took a really nice seven point and now she goes with Cory and they come back with this. I think she’ll be joining us for several more hunts!” exclaimed Gordon. BayouBucks.com sends out a big congratulations to Cory Coreil for taking his little sister hunting and also taking a great Louisiana whitetail!
